Beltsville-Based SunEdison Announces California Project
SunEdison LLC, of Beltsville, a provider of solar energy services, announced the activation of a new, 1.18 megawatt, ground- mounted photovoltaic solar power system at Ironwood State Prison, a medium security prison for men near Blythe, Calif., about 200 miles east of Los Angeles. (One megawatt equals 1 million watts and generally provides enough electricity to supply approximately 1,000 homes.) According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, which signed a solar power services agreement with SunEdison, the system’s more than 6,200 photovoltaic panels will produce more than 2.4 million kilowatt hours of solar energy in its first year. This is the second solar power system SunEdison has installed and operates at a California state prison, the company said.
