Infocast's Power Storage Summit in San Diego Convenes Pioneers in Utility-Scale Energy Storage Solutions for a Multi-Gigawatt Market

Posted on: Wednesday, 4 June 2008, 15:00 CDT

The first major conference framing the business case for bulk (utility-scale) power storage is set to take place in San Diego from July 14-16.

Energy storage is the missing key that simultaneously solves multiple looming challenges for a sustainable, smart power grid. Power storage can make intermittent power dispatchable and convert baseload into peaking power. It is critical for the ramping up of on-site generation and renewable power, as well as for balancing the grid. Numerous drivers, from climate concerns to runaway oil prices, "net zero buildings," and smart grid initiatives, are now converging to unleash the technology solutions on a wide scale.

The Power Storage Summit, produced by Infocast and sponsored by King & Spalding LLP and Haddington Ventures, brings together leading technology providers with utility executives, top consultants, project financiers and venture investors to understand the different business models for power storage for specific applications and niches, the technology options, and the financing mechanisms required to meet a projected 10-100Gigawatt need in the coming years. A keynote speech by Brett Perlman, former Texas PUC Commissioner, leads the event. A pre-Summit Workshop profiles the most cutting-edge technology research aiming to meet power storage opportunities.

Within the next few years, the advent of power storage will impact directly all participants in the power grid, from utilities, baseload, peaking and renewable generators, transmission operators, munis and LDCs, investors, industrial users, speculators, fuel suppliers, traders and marketers and end users. Attendees from these groups will learn to identify opportunities, trends and niches in an emerging 10-100GW market; understand how storage can be used to boost generator cash-flow and asset valuations by making intermittent power dispatchable and converting baseload into peaking power; learn how to value external power storage services and factor them into business models and development plans; acquire the best analysis to date of what large storage projects and applications will look like; and learn what investors -- equity, venture, and debt -- are looking for in the power storage space.
