Like most other industries in China, promotional wearable suppliers too are affected by rising production costs. Promotional wearable suppliers in China produce an estimated 60 percent of global supply, with many of the country's 4,000 makers exporting as many as 1 million pieces every month.
Products are shipped to the EU, the US, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, mostly on an OEM basis. Among the major clients are Levi's, Disney, Mattel Wal-Mart and The North Face in the US, Primark in the UK, Carrefour in France and Inditex in Spain.
The following are some of the key trends we see in China's promotional wearables industry:
-- The stronger value of the yuan against the US dollar, and higher material and labor costs are leading makers to raise export prices in the months ahead. Keen competition, however, is limiting increases to 10 percent.
-- The fast appreciation of the yuan is also pushing companies to implement different measures to minimize foreign exchange losses. This includes finalizing orders in currencies other than the US dollar and reducing the validity period of export prices.
-- The ongoing labor shortage, meanwhile, is resulting in an upsurge in subcontracted work. Forming partnerships with such factories is expected to stabilize capacity without having to hire enough workers to man in-house facilities. Companies are fortifying their QC teams instead and sending inspectors to the partner factories to monitor quality.
-- Suppliers will be investing in R&D capability upgrades to improve OEM services as well. Some makers are also conducting research into the use of upscale materials such as bamboo.
China makers can offer a wide range of promotional wearables from headwear to footwear. This report focuses on hats, caps, T-shirts, polo shirts, jackets, light parkas, windbreakers, hoodies, vests, cardigans and pullovers because they are the main products exported from China. Other types of wearables such as slippers, aprons, scarves and gloves are also covered in this report.
Promotional bags, jewelry and eyewear, however, are excluded.
The majority of China suppliers specialize in just one or two types, and very few offer a range of promotional wearables across all product lines. Only two of the profiled companies manufacture all types of promotional wearables as categorized in this report.
