LANSING, Mich., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Federal, state and regional leaders celebrated the formal opening of Port Lansing today at the Capital Region International Airport. The airport is now officially an international port of entry into the country with a United States Customs and Border Protection operation of the Department of Homeland Security in Lansing. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers are on-duty to process international passengers and airfreight.
"This is a monumental moment in the history of the airport, and truly changes our regional business landscape to allow direct access to a global economy," said Robert Selig, Executive Director of the Capital Region Airport Authority.
"U.S. Customs and Border Protection is looking forward to the opportunity to assist in bringing international flights to the Capital Region International Airport," said Port Director Sidney Aki.
An interim facility for U.S. Customs and Border Protection operations has been established at the west end of the airport, complete with inspection stations and interview rooms. The 2,100 square foot facility will accommodate corporate and general aviation aircrafts of up to 20 passengers per flight. Freight shipments into the state may now avoid slower customs processing operations at other Michigan airports.
A $5 million U.S. Customs and Border Protection permanent Federal Inspection Station is now under design and will soon be under construction at the Capital Region International Airport and will be able to process up to 200 passengers per hour when completed. The new 14,000 square foot facility will be in renovated space at the east end of the main terminal where until recently Northwest Airline had conducted ticketing and check-in operations. The new facility is expected to be open and ready for operations on or before June 2009.
