Stearns Assisted in ”Expanding What Healthcare Should Be” for Adventist Medical Center

June 18, 2008

Design–Build–Steel contractor R.F. Stearns, Inc. is pleased to announce the recent completion of a 112,000 square-foot parking structure for Adventist Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. Adventist Medical Center is considered the largest employer in Portland’s District 47 and the Emergency Department is one of the busiest in the City. Due to increasing patient demand, expansion was necessary to accommodate the needs of the surrounding communities. Adjacent to the hospital is a new 4-story pavilion providing various medical services and an outpatient surgery center. The modern multi-level steel-framed parking structure offers convenient access to the new facility for patients and visitors.

Due to previous successful project collaborations the team once again turned to Stearns to recommend the most effective and economical structural steel system. The 4-story parking structure is framed with cellular beams to meet KPFF Consulting Engineers’ schema for strength and spanning criterion. Stearns provided the coordination and design of the cellular beams and connections to interface with wide-flange girders and columns for an aesthetically pleasing structural steel system. Stearns’ early involvement and steel integrated solutions allowed them to commence detailing early in the design while progressing with component selection, procurement and fabrication. This aided in schedule and cost-saving advantages. Acknowledging Stearns involvement with the project team, Travis Baker, Andersen Construction Sr. Project Manager, affirmed, “Having Stearns’ expertise at the table early on allowed us to make design decisions and establish an accurate conceptual budget. The detailing and procurement processes were very smooth, which led to an efficient steel erection process. The structure, in no small part due to Stearns’ participation, was turned over to a satisfied client ahead of schedule.”

Jim Sarka, Project Manager, R.F. Stearns, Inc. stated, “It was a great pleasure to work with Andersen Construction and to be a part of providing their client with the highest quality, steel-framed parking garage structure. We look forward to the next opportunity to work together.”

The efforts of the entire design and construction teams are to be commended on numerous levels for the successful completion of this performance-driven project.
