Additional Sales and Commissioning of 5kW X 4hr VRB-ESS’s
RICHMOND, BC, June 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — VRB Power Systems Inc. (TSX-V: VRB) announces the sale of two additional 5kW x 4hr VRB Energy Storage Systems (VRB-ESS(TM)) to customers in Europe and the Middle East.
Ben Gurion University of Negev in Israel purchased a 5kW x 4 hour VRB-ESS to assess the benefits associated with solar energy integration at the University’s Blaustein Institute for Solar Energy. An additional system was sold to a large, multinational engineering organization in Germany to evaluate the system and determine which in-house application it can best be used (e.g. off-grid solutions, power quality).
Recently, VRB Power has commissioned multiple VRB-ESS’s, which include: – Winafrique Technologies Ltd., of Kenya (“Winafrique”) who are operating systems at two remote cellular telecommunications sites in Kenya with Safaricom Limited, the leading mobile telephone operator in Kenya (owned by Telkom Kenya and Vodafone Group Plc) (“Safaricom”). The installations mark the beginning of a trial of each system for the potential roll out of multiple systems at cellular telecommunications sites across East Africa; and – Edison SpA of Italy who are operating a 5kW x 4hr system for evaluation in a telecoms back-up application.
To date, VRB has sold a total of 15 small systems to 13 customers worldwide.
The marketing and sales strategy for the 5kW x 4hr VRB-ESS is focussed on remote telecommunication sites that are off-grid or have a weak grid connection in Africa, India and the Caribbean. The design and performance characteristics of the system make it extremely well suited to address these specific market requirements; particularly using a “hybrid” approach to providing electricity where a diesel generator is combined with an energy storage system and renewable energy sources, such as wind or solar. In these markets, the 5kW VRB-ESS offers immediate benefits such as reduced diesel emissions, lower life cycle costs, minimal maintenance, and longer discharge capabilities with end users experiencing three to five year paybacks.
About VRB Power
Headquartered in Richmond, Canada, VRB Power Systems Inc. is an energy storage technology developer which is marketing, selling and manufacturing products utilizing the patented VRB Energy Storage System (“VRB-ESS(TM)”). The VRB-ESS can economically store and supply large amounts of electricity on demand and is focused on stationary applications. It is a long life, cost effective, low maintenance, efficient technology that allows for the scalability of power and storage capacity independently. The VRB-ESS is particularly beneficial to renewable energy providers, utilities and end users through its ability to “inventory” electricity, allowing for the optimal match of supply and demand.
The VRB-ESS is well suited for a variety of applications. Enabling the provision of “firm” capacity from intermittent renewable generation such as wind and solar; more cost effective and efficient generation of electricity in remote areas; capital deferral for utilities; and load levelling (peak shaving) applications. The VRB-ESS is also capable of providing backup power solutions including applications for utility sub-stations and telecommunication sites. The VRB-ESS is characterized by having the lowest ecological impact of all energy storage technologies and is unlike most other conventional energy storage systems that rely on substances such as lead or cadmium.
