Several blocks of southern Lancaster city were without landline phone service Thursday after a tractor-trailer knocked down wires on Chesapeake Street, police said.

The wires, part of Verizon telephone lines, fell onto the 500 block of Chesapeake Street about 1:30 p.m., police said.

Residents in the area of Chesapeake Street – from South Ann Street possibly all the way to East King Street – were expected to be without phone service until this morning.

Verizon employees were trying to repair the lines and restore service Thursday.

Information about the truck wasn’t available Thursday.
