Elk Valley Coal Commits $250,000 for Safe and Environmentally Friendly Playgrounds

June 24, 2008

CALGARY, ALBERTA–(Marketwire – June 23, 2008) – Elk Valley Coal Corporation and the British Columbia’s East Kootenay School District No. 5 held groundbreaking ceremonies today in Fernie, Sparwood and Elkford to announce that construction of state-of-the-art playgrounds will begin in early July. The unique new playgrounds feature structures and equipment that will offer people a safe and enjoyable opportunity for recreation. The most distinctive design element is the incorporation of a crumb-rubber, recycled-tire safety surfacing making all the playgrounds completely wheelchair and senior accessible.

The project coordinator and designer is Frank Lento, former Principal of Mountainview Elementary and Rocky Mountain Elementary and former Vice-Principal of Isabella Dicken Elementary. According to Mr. Lento, “the projects grew both out of the need to replace outdated playgrounds and the vision to create spaces which bring together all ages, from pre-school children to seniors in a healthy, community-centered environment. These playgrounds will be a hallmark within our communities and we hope they inspire everyone to enjoy a more active lifestyle.”

The playgrounds will be located at the Isabella Dicken Elementary School in Fernie, the Frank J. Mitchell School in Sparwood, and the Rocky Mountain Elementary School in Elkford.

“The projects are incredibly exciting,” said Bill Gook, Superintendent for School District No. 5, “and we want to acknowledge the tremendous financial support and cooperation of our major sponsor Elk Valley Coal as well as organizations and individual donors in each community.”

“At Elk Valley Coal, we place tremendous importance on the environment and the safety of our employees and their families,” said Doug Stokes, Vice President of Operations. “These values extend to the communities that support our operations. We are very pleased to make this contribution toward the development of these safe and environmentally friendly playgrounds.”
