Boston-Power Joins World Leaders to Advance Role of Energy Storage in Environmental Sustainability

Posted on: Thursday, 26 June 2008, 09:03 CDT

Boston-Power, Inc., a rapidly growing provider of first-to-market portable power solutions, recently underscored its leadership role in driving environmentally responsible energy storage solutions with its participation in two distinguished international conferences.

On June 5 and 6, Boston-Power Founder and CEO Dr. Christina Lampe-Onnerud joined a group of 100 high-ranking government officials, global business leaders and members of academia for "Climate Conference 08: Technology and Finance in Climate Cooperation." Attendees were hand-picked to provide their insights into the discussion on provisions needed for a successful post-2012 climate agreement. Internationally recognized for her expertise in energy storage and next-generation battery technology, Dr. Lampe-Onnerud was one of only a handful of U.S. representatives - and Boston-Power was the only U.S.-based startup - invited to attend.

A cornerstone to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change Convention (UNFCCC) and a precursor to the post-Kyoto Protocol in Copenhagen 2009, the Oslo summit was charged with giving the UNFCCC recommendations on how to use technology to halt climate change. Dr. Lampe- Onnerud participated in discussions that contributed greater specificity in terms of goals and measures for greenhouse gas emission.

Boston-Power was also invited by China's Environmental Certification Centre (CEC) - part of the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection - to participate in the "International Conference on Sustainable Consumption, Eco-labeling and Green Procurement" in Beijing, June 10-12. In April, Dr. Lampe-Onnerud was presented with the Chinese eco-labeling certificate by CEC in recognition of Boston-Power's high environmental sustainability standards and responsibility in its manufacturing operations. Notably, Boston-Power is the first Lithium-ion battery manufacturer to earn this distinction.

The Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection hosted the conference with fellow sponsors the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the European Commission (EC). The goal of the event was to facilitate the exchange of information and experience on sustainable consumption and procurement strategies at international and local levels. Boston-Power was invited to share its knowledge and experience in attaining sustainable manufacturing practices and discuss the essentials of greening procurement.

"Our company's participation in both of these conferences reflects our commitment to environmental responsibility and the vital roles that energy storage and efficiency serve in those efforts," said Dr. Lampe-Onnerud. "As a business leader, I appreciate the need to share new innovation equitably worldwide. As both scientists and businesspeople we at Boston-Power feel called to work alongside world leaders to respond to the global call for environmental responsibility."

Dr. Lampe-Onnerud was instrumental in building consensus among the attendees of the Oslo conference regarding the importance of metrics for measuring the effectiveness of promising technologies. Conference attendees agreed these metrics will be essential in accelerating the deployment of these technologies. Dr. Lampe-Onnerud also played an important role in the discussion regarding making low-carbon technologies a top priority. Conference participants agreed that work on energy efficiency is just as important as work on new energy-supply technologies. To this end, the group resolved to work together to establish national and international targets for transport efficiency to minimize energy consumption, and to consider a measurement in Kilowatt Hour (kWh) the foundation for such a strategy.

Boston-Power is also the first rechargeable Lithium-ion battery manufacturer to attain "Nordic Ecolabel" certification. Created in 1989 by the Nordic Council of Ministers, the endorsement signifies a company's efforts to create environmentally sustainable products.
