Next-Generation Ethanol Arrives in Canada

The Canadian Renewable Fuels Association (CRFA) today congratulated GreenField Ethanol and Enerkem on their announcement to build the world’s first industrial scale municipal waste-to-ethanol facility in Edmonton, Alberta. The $70-million next-generation renewable fuels plant will initially produce 36 million litres of ethanol from non-recyclable waste products every year.

“Today, commercial scale next-generation ethanol became a reality in Canada” said Gordon Quaiattini, President of the Canadian Renewable Fuels Association in response to the announcement. “Greenfield Ethanol and Enerkem have pioneered a global first. This waste-to-ethanol facility is viable proof of the promise of next-generation renewable fuels.”

The new commercial cellulosic ethanol plant will use non-recyclable waste products to make a clean-burning renewable fuel using innovative technology developed in Canada.
