RJ passenger number rises by 30 pct in May

AMMAN, June 25 (Xinhua) -- The number of Royal Jordanian Airline (RJ) passengers in May registered an year-on-year rise of 30 percent thanks to improved service, upgraded fleet and other measures, local daily Jordan Times reported Wednesday.

RJ carried 215,000 passengers in May as against 166,000 in May last year while the number of first five months of this year has hiked by 21 percent against the same period of last year, RJ President and CEO Samer Majali said in a news release.

This May also saw the average seat factor climbing to 70 percent from 64 percent in May last year, he added.

Majali stressed that a growing demand has shown on all RJ's 55 destinations this year, citing reasons including the distinguished services offered to passengers, the modern fleet of aircraft recently acquired and the electronic systems that facilitate travel procedures at the airport such as Internet booking and electronic tickets.

However, Majali expressed concern about the skyrocketing fuel prices, which cost the airline around 26.5 million Jordanian Dinar (about 37.4 million U.S. dollars) this May, marking an year-on- year hike of 110 percent.

He said the current fuel prices constitute a significant obstacle for all international airlines since they limit the ambition to develop and modernize the self-reliant companies.
