"We are proud to be doing business in the great State of Texas, the leading state for wind energy in the U.S.," said Antonio Martins da Costa, chief executive officer, Horizon Wind Energy. "The Lone Star Wind Farm is important to the Horizon project portfolio and we are grateful to those who made it possible, including J Aron, our landowners, and the supportive communities in Shackelford and Callahan Counties."
The Lone Star Wind Farm has been in full operation since May 2008. J Aron, the commodities trading arm of Goldman Sachs, continues to purchase the clean, renewable electricity from Phase II of Lone Star Wind Farm.
200 Gamesa 2.0 MW turbines represent an installed capacity of 400 MW of wind energy for the State of Texas, equaling enough energy to power at least 120,000 Texas homes with environmentally friendly electricity. The Lone Star Wind Farm prevents the annual emission of approximately 900,000 tons of carbon dioxide, a contributor to climate change; nearly 1.5 million pounds of nitrogen oxide, which causes smog; and nearly 3.9 million pounds of sulfur dioxide, which causes acid rain. In addition, the Wind Farm displaces nearly 35,000 pounds of mercury each year. The environmental benefits are equivalent to taking about 90,000 cars off of the road.
Direct Energy purchases 200 MW of the clean, renewable electricity produced by Phase I of Lone Star Wind Farm.
