Canada’s GDP Makes Small Gain in April
Canada’s gross domestic product nudged up 0.4 percent in April, reversing a two-month decline, Statistics Canada reported from Ottawa Monday.
By sector, increases in manufacturing, wholesale and retail trade as well as the financial sector, which offset declines in construction, oil and gas extraction and exploration, StatsCan said.
Notably, motor vehicle production increased by 7 percent in April after a significant reduction in March, the agency said. The decline was based on a strike in the United States that hurt the supply of parts, the report said.
The accommodation and food services sector grew 1.2 percent in April, a fourth consecutive increase, aided by an increase in overnight travel from international travelers,
Output for the mining sector, excluding oil and gas, increased by 0.9 percent in April, while support activities for mining and oil and gas extraction fell 4.6 percent. Actual oil and gas extraction dropped 1.7 percent, the report said.
