Do Not Leave Us Out

July 2, 2008

IN view of the recent fuel price hike, I hope the government does not leave out pensioners.

Not every pensioner worked for 30 years – many worked for 25 years or less – and thus will not be getting any increase in the new pension calculations effective in January.

Not all pensioners own cars, but the chain effect of the electricity rates hike from yesterday, the increase in cooking oil, flour, rice and the spiralling effect on vegetables, roti canai and teh tarik will affect all pensioners.

The government should come out with a mechanism to help pensioners – rebates on LRTs, buses, electricity bill payment, etc. Include all pensioners when giving out incentives. Pensioners should be rewarded, not forgotten.
