Mosaic Restaurant Settles Harassment Suit

July 2, 2008

Jul. 2–The downtown restaurant Mosaic has settled a federal lawsuit that alleged that two former bartenders were sexually harassed on an almost-daily basis.

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed the lawsuit in federal court in St. Louis last year, alleging that Aimee Boss and Morgan Hagedon quit after being subjected to “crude sexual comments,”"solicitations for sex” and “offensive sexual touching” by an investor and frequent customer of the bar and restaurant formerly at 1101 Lucas Avenue, and now at 1001 Washington Avenue.

The suit also alleged that the investor, Andrew Gladney, sometimes harassed the bartenders in front of their supervisor, Greg Doyle, and Mosaic’s majority owner, Claus Schmitz.

U.S. District Judge Donald J. Stohr approved the settlement agreement today, in which Mosaic did not admit liability or admit the employees’ allegations, but did agree to pay both Boss and Hagedon $5,000 in back pay and $27,000 in compensatory damages each. Each will also get letters of reference praising them. They also promised to bar Gladney from Mosaic and change their sexual harassment policy.

Mosaic’s lawyers could not be reached for comment. Doyle said, “no comment,” then hung up the phone.

Miller said ownership of the restaurant has been “reorganized” and Gladney no longer has an interest.

In 1995, Gladney co-founded a company that would later became Savvis Communications Corp.

In 1997, he agreed to step down as chairman and chief executive. He was fired as vice chairman in January 1999.
