BJ’s Wholesale Club Reports June Sales Results

BJ’s Wholesale Club, Inc. (NYSE: BJ) today reported that sales for June 2008 increased by 18.8% to $1.05 billion from $887 million in June 2007. On a comparable club basis, sales for June 2008 increased by 16.5%, including a contribution from sales of gasoline worth 8.2%. Merchandise comparable club sales of 8.3% reflected a higher than expected mix of low-margin consumable items such as paper products, health & beauty aids and household chemicals.

The Company provided the following additional information regarding comparable club sales for June 2008:

— By week, the strongest sales increase was in week 5 and the lowest sales increase was in week 4, reflecting a shift in the timing of the July 4 holiday versus last year.

— By region, the Southeast and Upstate New York had the highest sales increases and the Metro New York region had the lowest sales increase.

— Excluding sales of gasoline, traffic increased by approximately 6% versus last year and the average transaction amount increased by approximately 2%.

— Sales of food increased by approximately 11%, driven by strong sales of perishable foods. Sales of general merchandise increased by approximately 4%, driven by strong sales of air conditioners and consumer packaged goods.

— Departments with the strongest sales increases compared to last year included air conditioners, bakery, coffee, cookies, dairy, frozen, health & beauty, household chemicals, meat, oils & shortenings, pet food, paper, produce, soda and water, snacks, toys and video games. Weaker departments versus last year included cigarettes, electronics, residential furniture, jewelry, storage and televisions.
