Greenling Promotes Sustainability With Organic and Local Food Delivery

AUSTIN, Texas, July 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Greenling (greenling.com), an award-winning online grocer that delivers organic and local food fresh to its customers' doors, marks its third anniversary this summer with plans to expand across Central Texas.
Greenling works with more than 30 local farmers in the Austin area and was voted Best Local Food Company in the 2007 Austin Chronicle's Readers poll, replacing previous winner Whole Foods Market. The grocer will expand its markets in Austin and San Antonio in 2008 by creating new delivery routes and product offerings, including organic wines and beers. Greenling also plans to launch operations in Dallas and Houston in the future, which support sustainable communities and agriculture. Greenling does this by establishing local relationships that are economically viable, environmentally sound and socially responsible.
"We advocate that everyone makes small changes in their grocery buying and eating habits, rather than lifestyle overhauls," said Mason Arnold, founder of Greenling. "Our goal in the next year is to educate people about where their food comes from, who grows it, what's in it, and how to use it."
The Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture reported in 2007 that the average fresh food item on our dinner table travels between 1,500 and 3,000 miles to get to our plates. Buying locally produced food eliminates the need for transportation, improves taste and benefits the local economy.
A shift in people's attitudes about food may be part of the reason for Greenling's success. In the past three years, the company has grown from three employees working out of a garage to a 20-person team that has delivered groceries to more than 4,000 people. The grocer has expanded its product offering from 50 products to more 500, now running a fleet of five delivery vehicles and packing its groceries in branded insulated bins.
"Increased sales and a larger operation enable us to recycle or reuse much of our office paper in the baskets we send out," Arnold said. "We shred clean office paper and use it as padding and insulation for our deliveries. We use green electricity for everything we do and plan to add a biodegrading agent to our bins so the plastic becomes completely biodegradable."
