Jul. 14–TROY — Borough council has decided to sell water in bulk for gas drilling.

During this week’s borough council meeting, the matter was discussed.

Two natural-gas drilling companies have expressed in interest in buying the water. They are Chesapeake Appalachia, LLC of Charleston, W.Va., and another represented by EOG of Indiana, Pa., Dan Close, borough manager, said. The borough had sent them letters of intent at their request.

Close said the borough can sell up to 100,000 gallons per day. He said it should not affect the supply. “We’ll be operating below our safe yield levels,” he said. This will be raw water, and not treated, he noted.

The water is used in the drilling operations. “We’ll sell it to whatever company is here to buy it,” he said.

The water will be transported to the drill site and stored for drilling. The sites are located outside the borough.

The price is $16 per 1,000 gallons.

“I do not know how many days this will go on,” he said. “The amount (of revenue) generated for the borough will, of course, depend on the amount of water they purchase. I would estimate at least 30 days at 100,000 gallons per day. This is an opportunity for the borough to generate some funds to help with water system improvement cost.”
