City Eyed for Air Coupe Convention
By Bob Gibbins, Tahlequah Daily Press, Okla.
Jul. 16–Organizers of an annual air coupe convention have expressed some interest in having the event here in 2010.
Airport Manager Greg Blish said he was contacted prior to the Airport Advisory Board’s monthly meeting about the event, which could bring a large number of planes and pilots to Tahlequah.
No definite plans have been made for Tahlequah to host the event, but Blish said he has also contacted Tourism Director Kate Kelly about the possibility.
Blish said Tahlequah hosted the convention approximately 30 years ago.
The board said it would support Tahlequah’s hosting the event and recommend support to the city council.
The board also met briefly with Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director David Moore concerning the 2008 BalloonFest. Moore said a carnival is planned for the three days of the festival on Hazel Bryant property near the airport. Admission buttons will not be sold for the BalloonFest this year.
Moore said attendance has been down, and organizers hope the carnival will offset the loss from not charging the $8 admission. Blish said he has been working with festival organizers to coordinate height issues for some of the carnival rides. Moore said the plan is to have the taller rides set up the longest distance from the airport.
Approval was given on a lease transfer from Brian Bobb and Brian Miggletto to Mark Hodson and Kyle Turk. The transfer must now be approved by city councilors.
Blish also said fuel sales have picked up after a decline in recent months. The airport had $10,117.35 in av-gas sales and $18,182.68 in jet fuel sales for June, for a total of $28,300.03.
The next regular meeting of the Tahlequah Airport Advisory Board will be Tuesday, Aug. 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the Terminal Building at the airport.
