Jul. 17--DENMARK -- A structural steel fabrication and detailing company is now operating out of the old Holland Atlantic Hitch plant.
Denmark Steel Inc. began operations July 1 in the former 17,500-square-foot Holland Hitch Annex building at the plant, located at 19192 Heritage Highway.
Denmark Steel does structural steel fabrication, structural steel detailing and ornamental rails and stairs for commercial applications.
"I love the building," said Denmark Steel owner Sam Quattlebaum. "We have plenty of room here for future growth. The location is pretty central to our market area. This space will let me expand to good markets. We hope to put on a couple of more workers as soon as work picks up."
The company plans to employ between 10 or 12 within the next six months. Denmark Steel expects to employ 28 to 35 within the next few years.
Currently, Denmark Steel employs about eight, with four working in the office and four in the production area. The company is looking for additional painters and fabricators.
The amount of the investment was not immediately released.
Denmark Steel has clients in the Columbia, Aiken, Charlotte and Savannah, Ga. areas.
"We have worked with him over the last few months," said Kay Maxwell, Southern Carolina Alliance marketing and special projects manager. "We recruited him to the area. The location is perfect for him and it is a very nice facility."
The SCA is an economic development organization that markets Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell and Hampton counties.
Holland Hitch, a tractor parts manufacturing plant, provided jobs in Bamberg County for 38 years. The company ceased operations in November 2002.
Another 108,000-square-foot building, which has received some interest from a number of potential prospects, is also located on the property.
