Oklahoma’s Exisiting Wind Farms
By Jack Money, The Oklahoman
Jul. 20–* The Blue Canyon Wind Power project, in Comanche and Caddo counties, generates about 225 megawatts of power. The project uses 45 turbines, each capable of generating 1.65 megawatts and 84 turbines, each capable of generating 1.8 megawatts. They generate enough power to supply about 61,000 homes, the Oklahoma Wind Power Initiative says. About a third of the power is bought by the Western Farmer Electric Cooperative, while the remainder is bought by American Electric Power’s Public Service Co. of Oklahoma. Horizon Wind Energy owns the development. Its first phase came on line in 2003, and its second phase began operating at the end of 2005.
* The FPL Energy Sooner Wind project, in Harper and Woodward counties, generates about 100 megawatts of power. The development uses 68 turbines, each capable of generating 1.5 megawatts of power — enough to supply about 30,000 homes, the wind power initiative says. The power is bought by the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority and Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. Florida Power and Light owns the development, which started operating in 2003.
* The Weatherford Wind Energy Center, in Custer County, generates about 147 megawatts of power using 98 turbines, each capable of generating 1.5 megawatts of power, which could supply about 44,000 homes, the wind power initiative says. Its power is bought by American Electric Power’s Public Service Co. of Oklahoma. Florida Power and Light owns the project, which started operating in 2005.
* The Centennial Wind Farm, in Harper County, generates about 120 megawatts of power using 80, 1.5 megawatt turbines. The operation generates enough power to supply about 36,000 homes. The electricity is bought by OG&E, which also owns the project. It started operating at the end of 2006.
* The Sleeping Bear Wind Farm, in Harper County, generates about 95 megawatts of power using 45 2-megawatt turbines. The operation generates enough power to supply about 28,000 homes. The electricity is bought by Public Service Co. of Oklahoma. The development is owned by Edison Mission Group. It began operating in 2007.
