LOS ANGELES, July 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The African American Supplier Engagement Collaboration today hosted its first business symposium to bring African-American business owners together with procurement professionals to extend knowledge and strategies that will foster stronger business relationships.
The symposium focused on professional services and included information on Verizon's risk management program from Sheila Small, assistant treasurer - risk management and insurance, of Verizon's Corporate Finance division.
"This symposium offered a solid platform for the kind of business interactivity and networking that is needed to grow business opportunities," said Small.
The symposium is part of a program to increase the success of African American companies in California. The program is funded by a $250,000 grant from Verizon to the National Black Business Council, the California Black Chamber of Commerce and the Black Business Association. Earlier this year, the three nonprofits created the African American Supplier Engagement Collaboration, a consortium designed to create greater opportunities for African-American-owned companies to serve as suppliers to major corporations throughout California.
"This symposium is further evidence of Verizon's commitment to the African American community and the need to grow small businesses in California," said Black Business Association President, Earl "Skip" Cooper. "It also validates a business approach for collaboration between nonprofit groups whose ultimate goal is to stimulate economic growth in the state of California."
