Wartsila Contracted to Supply 100MW Power Plant for Installation in Togo

Posted on: Tuesday, 22 July 2008, 03:00 CDT

Finnish power engineering company Wartsila has been awarded a turnkey contract by ContourGlobal Togo to supply a 100MW power plant for installation in the Republic of Togo. The power plant will comprise six Wartsila 50DF engines designed for tri-fuel capability.

The power plant will be installed in Lome, the capital city of Togo, and is scheduled to be fully operational by the fourth quarter 2009. The engines will be able to run on natural gas, light fuel oil or heavy fuel oil.

The fuel can reportedly be switched while the engines are operating, eliminating the need to stop the engine. The plant will deliver the same output on all three fuels. This way, the power plant can always use the cheapest and the most readily available fuel.

When operational, the plant is expected to significantly diversify Togo's power generation portfolio and will supplement the country's hydroelectric power during the dry season. The electricity investment is said to be the largest in Togo's history and it will double the country's generating capacity.

Tony van Velzen, regional director for Africa at Wartsila's power plants division, said: "We have enjoyed extremely good co-operation with ContourGlobal in developing this project. The tri-fuel capability of the engines was a key factor in being awarded the contract, in addition to the fact that the Wartsila 50DF engine offers high output, low emission rates, first class efficiency, and excellent reliability."
