Offset for Firms’ Carbon Emissions

Companies in Yorkshire can offset carbon emissions from gas consumption under a new scheme offered by Gaz de France. In the scheme, GdF calculates the level of emissions and purchases credits from partner company, co2balance.

GdF, which has its UK headquarters in Leeds, said participating companies can ensure the equivalent carbon emissions are reduced, avoided or absorbed. The French company said the scheme is timely and pointed out that from 2010 all companies consuming more than 6GWh of energy will be obliged to register with the Environment Agency.

Aside from planting trees, other carbon offset projects include the conversion of kerosene lamps used in Africa to solar power with a solar panel and rechargeable batteries.
