Report: Airport Workers Need More Checks

A British government report recommends airport workers be checked for crimes committed in other countries, as well as in Britain.
The report by a former civil servant, Steven Boys Smith, suggested the airports are under threat from terrorist attack, The Daily Telegraph reported.
About 200,000 people work in airport jobs, including baggage handlers, employees of airport shops and restaurants and janitors in terminals. While they are currently checked for criminal records in Britain, foreign employees are not checked in their native countries.
The report said the government and air industry have acted decisively to prevent terrorist attacks.
As these measures become more effective so the future threat may increasingly come from the insider rather than passengers or members of the public. It is right to consider how to be ready for this, the report said.
Smith did not recommend doing checks on those already employed.
