A proposed $500-million geothermal power station near Taupo could pump $90 million into the local economy, a special board considering the proposal has heard. The board of inquiry, appointed by the environment minister, is considering Contact Energy’s resource- consent application to build the Te Mihi power station on the Wairakei- Tauhara steamfield, 10km northwest of Taupo. It is planned that the 220-MegaWatt station will supply electricity to 70,000 homes and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 330,000 tonnes of CO2 a year when fully operational in 2016.
