Renovations to Cady Library Explained

July 29, 2008

Jul. 29–NICHOLS — The Cady Library is currently undergoing some much-needed renovations, but the pace may seem slow for some.

Not for Nichols Town Board member Horst Wagner, however. “I don’t care if it takes five years,” Wagner said. “He’s (Bill Reynolds) doing an excellent job.”

Wagner said that two years ago officials received a grant from the government because the Cady Library is on the historical register of buildings. When they put the bids out, however, they could accept ones at the prevailing wage. “Most did not want to do it” after they found that out, Wagner said. The other bids they received were for $150,000. He said, there was “nothing we could (do) without permission.”

Wagner said that they could have a certified painter with a partner do it without bids. “Lucky for us a Nichols Village resident could do it,” Wagner remarked. He did it for less than one-third of the amount. Reynolds has since been working for a year alone on the project. Wagner said, “We want to do it right.”

It’s difficult to support the library, Wagner said. just last year the heating bill was $1,200 a month. It takes “a lot of money,” he added. It is a “beautiful building” Wagner did say, and explained that it has a meeting room upstairs and “computers for the kids.” He mentioned he tried to put plastic over certain halls upstairs to help with the heating but couldn’t because it is a “historical building.”

Wagner also mentioned that he’s trying to get the back of building insulated. It is currently unused.
