Dubai-based airline Emirates has taken the delivery of its first A380 superjumbo at Airbus's new Jurgen Thomas A380 delivery center in Hamburg, Germany.
The delivery of the new A380 aircraft takes the Emirates fleet to 118, including 108 passenger aircraft and 10 freighters. This aircraft will be deployed on the Dubai-New York route.
Emirates is due to receive five A380s in the financial year 2008, which ends March 31, 2009, and will receive the remaining 53 by June 2013. The first five 489-seat, long-range aircraft will be deployed on some of the routes including New York, London Heathrow, Sydney and Auckland.
Ahmed Al-Maktoum, chairman and CEO of Emirates Airline and Group, said: "We have stood firm on our commitment to the A380. Our investment in the aircraft, including engines and inflight features, exceeds E32 billion, with E12 billion spent in Germany alone."
