Bid to Level Cathedral

July 31, 2008

AN AID agency has put in an application to demolish St Paul’s Cathedral in protest against a British company’s plans to mine a sacred mountain in India.

ActionAid is seeking to raise awareness of plans by Vedanta Resources to open a mine to extract bauxite from the Niyamgiri mountain in the Indian state of Orissa.

The mountain is sacred to the 8,000- strong Kondh tribe, who believe it is home to their god Niyam Raja.

There are also fears that the mining will lead to the destruction of local ecosystems.
