Aug. 7–BOSWELL — Although borough residents have organized a crime watch, state police still are seeing a number of burglaries in the area.

The most recent came Tuesday afternoon, when someone took advantage of an unlocked door at a home along Quemahoning Street.

“We are seeing an increase in the number of daytime burglaries in that area,” Trooper John Matchik said. “People need to remember to lock doors, windows and cars.”

Police are investigating the burglary at Montreda Steckman’s residence, where someone walked through an un-locked door between 4:30 and 8:30 p.m. and stole $2,100 worth of goods, including a laptop computer and a digital camera.

“Residents need to take extra efforts to ensure that their residences are secure,” Matchik added.

Outside the borough, in surrounding Jenner Township, state police have charged a Jerome man with stealing steel plating from a coal yard scale that belongs to Ted Beahr of Boswell.

Police said 35-year-old James Shaffer removed the steel plating on Saturday and sold it to Kantner Iron and Steel in neighboring Quemahoning Township. The owner of the scrap yard, which had been burglarized Friday night, recognized him and contacted police, according to a release from the Somerset barracks.

Police are investigating who might have stolen $15,000 from the Quemahoning Township scrap yard. Someone broke into the building Friday night or early Saturday morning, grabbed the cash and fled undetected, according to police.

Matchik said it’s too early to tell whether the string of burglaries could be related.
