Vietnam Encounters Power Shortage
Vietnam encounters power shortage
HANOI, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) — Vietnam is facing an electricity shortage of 1,000-1,500 MW a day, local newspaper Young People on Wednesday quoted the country’s biggest electricity producer and sole distributor as reporting.
The shortage is mainly caused by breakdowns and maintenance at some power plants, and higher demand for electricity, said the biggest producer, state-owned Electricity Vietnam. Therefore, there have been recent blackouts in some areas.
The state-owned group is expected to increase its output by around 15 percent this year, while local demand is estimated to rise by 17-18 percent. In some provinces, the electricity demand increased 40 percent in the first quarter of the year.
