Tokyo Gas Takes Stake in Biomass Power Firm
Tokyo, Aug. 11 (Jiji Press)–Tokyo Gas Co. said Monday it has taken a stake in an eastern Japan firm preparing to start power generation using wood waste.
Tokyo Gas acquired a 4.44 pct stake in the company, Agatsuma Biopower, which was previously a wholly owned unit of leasing company Orix Corp. , for an undisclosed sum.
Agatsuma Biopower, based in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, will start operating a power plant in the year that begins in April 2010 with an output of 13,600 kilowatts, equal to the combined annual power consumption of some 23,000 households.
For fuel, the plant will use wood waste, including discarded construction materials. Combustion of such fuel is considered to have a neutral impact on the environment in terms of carbon dioxide emissions, because plants remove the heat-trapping gas from the air during growth.
Tokyo Gas will buy all of the electricity to be generated by Agatsuma Biopower’s new plant.END
