August 12, 2008

MANGALORE: Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa on Saturday indicated toughening his stance against rampant mining in the state.

Speaking at a party workers meeting here, Yeddyurappa said that the state was contemplating to give mining licences only to those who would start steel industry.

Observing that developed nations were protecting their natural resources and importing ore from developing countries, he said that 150 import applications from Russia have been kept pending since a month as he wanted to discourage exports from here to other countries.

Regarding Congress’ statement to put an end to mining, he shot back saying that it was the Congress , which gave the licences, and now they are asking us to stop mining.
