Azerbaijan Suspends Oil Export Via Baku-Supsa Due to Georgia Crisis

August 12, 2008

Azerbaijan has suspended oil deliveries through a pipeline connecting Baku with Georgia’s Black Sea port of Supsa due to the resumption of hostilities in the neighbouring country, Interfax news agency has said, quoting BP.

“We stopped the pumping [of oil] as a measure of precaution in connection with the developments in Georgia,” BP’s Baku office said. “We are carefully watching the situation. The resumption of the pumping will depend on the normalization of the situation.”

Interfax said that Azerbaijan continues exporting oil from its offshore Azari-Ciraq-Gunasli field to world markets via the Baku- Novorossiysk pipeline and by rail. The main export pipeline Baku- Tbilisi-Ceyhan has been closed since an explosion took place in its Turkish section a week ago.
