Letter: Your Say – Ironstone Minefield

August 21, 2008

By M ELVIDGE

IN your report on the death of the last ironstone miner who worked in the Eston mine, it is stated that it “has brought the curtain down on the long-gone ironstone mining … to East Cleveland and beyond”.

Please remember that other mines were still working and that the last one, North Skelton, worked until 1964, so I’m sure many miners who worked in those mines are still around.

Your editorial repeats the statement that the last Teesside ironstone miner has died.

Possibly true, but the article mentions “East Cleveland and beyond”.

Also, some men moved away to work in the coalfields and even the anhydrite mine at Billingham, and may still be collecting their pensions.
