Kyushu Electric to Build Large-Scale Solar Power Plant
Fukuoka, Aug. 25 (Jiji Press)–Kyushu Electric Power Co. said Monday it will build a large-scale solar power plant near this southwestern Japan city in an effort to increase its use of renewable energy.
The plant, with an output capacity of 3,000 kilowatts, will be built on a vacant lot in Omuta, Fukuoka Prefecture, where a coal- fired thermal power plant of the firm used to stand.
Construction work will start in September or October 2009 for completion in the second half of fiscal 2010.
Total costs for the plant, which will use up to 30,000 solar panels to produce 3.15 kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, are seen reaching 2.5 billion yen.
Kyushu Electric said the solar power plant will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 1,300 tons per year.END
