UK News Bulletin: Strikers Claim Caterers Scanning Luggage

STRIKING airport bag handlers yesterday said employers had breached safety procedures by bringing in caterers to operate luggage scanners.

About 30 members of the GMB union stopped operating luggage scanners at Stansted Airport for a 24 hours yesterday after a pay dispute with employer Airfield Services.

The union said bosses had responded by using catering staff to plug the gap. Leaders said they would complain to airport owner BAA and Government transport ministers.

Staff began the 24-hour strike at around 3am after rejecting a 1.5% pay offer.
