Energex, a power generation and distribution company, has announced that more than 9,300 Gold Coast homes and businesses in Queensland, Australia, will benefit from the recent completion of an A$7.1 million upgrade to its Robina substation and other associated network upgrades in the area.

The main component of the project was the commissioning of two new 60MVA transformers in the substation, replacing two 30MVA transformers, and effectively doubling available electricity capacity for distribution to homes and businesses.

Energex said that the demand for electricity in the area had been increasing by more than 6% per year for the past five years and was predicted to continue growing at similar rates. To meet the massive growth in the past three years, Energex has spent more than A$330 million upgrading the region’s electricity network.

The Robina upgrade also provides Energex technicians with more switching options to restore power faster after unexpected damage to the network caused by storms, wild weather, vehicles hitting power poles or underground cables being accidentally damaged.
