SUNBURY, Pa., Sept. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Weis Markets is launching its Fight Hunger Food Drive, a month-long, chain-wide program that will offer its customers an opportunity to donate shelf-stable products to local food banks and emergency food providers.
The program will begin Thursday September 4 and run through the end of September. It will run in Weis Markets' stores, including its King's and Mr. Z's banners, in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and West Virginia.
"September is Hunger Action month. It's an important time of year for food banks as they prepare for the coming winter. We've talked to food banks in our service area and we're hearing about the increased need for food donations this year. We'd like to help," said David J. Hepfinger, Weis Markets' President and COO. "With our Fight Hunger Food Drive, our associates and customers will have the opportunity to support eleven food banks and the hundreds of emergency food providers they serve. We will also make monetary donations to each of these food banks at the end of our campaign."
Mr. Hepfinger said his company has worked with food banks to compile a list of the shelf-stable foods they need most, including: cereal, apple sauce, pasta, granola bars, canned beans, 100% fruit juice, canned fruit, grated cheese, rice, boxed mac and cheese, peanut butter, soups, canned sauce, instant potatoes, canned chicken and fish, canned vegetables and boxed skillet dinners.
Each Weis Markets' store will have a Fight Hunger shelf display. After customers purchase the foods they would like to donate, they can simply place them in a tan Fight Hunger bag to drop in a specially-marked donation collection cart near checkout. Donors will be invited to sign a "I Helped Fight Hunger" badge for display in each store's front window.
The Fight Hunger Food Drive is being coordinated through: The Second Harvest Food Bank of the Lehigh Valley and Northeast, PA; The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (Harrisburg); The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (Williamsport); The Maryland Food Bank; The Commission on Economic Opportunity/The Weinberg Northeast Regional Food Bank (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton); Greater Berks Food Bank (Reading); Food Bank of the Southern Tier (Elmira); Northwest Community Action Program Food Bank (Phillipsburg, NJ); Philabundance (Philadelphia); Capital Area Food Bank (Washington D.C.) and Mountaineer Food Bank (West Virginia).
