Plane With Blown Tire Lands Safely
An American Airlines jetliner circled back to Los Angeles International Airport about an hour after taking off Tuesday amid reports that the nose gear tire was shredded and landed safely at about 12:55 p.m.
The pilot reported a problem with Boeing 737-800 aircraft's landing gear shortly after Flight 1586 took off at 10:36 a.m. for Toronto, according to airport and airline officials.
Officials said the pilot reportedly planned to stay in the air for 45 minutes to an hour to burn fuel before making an emergency landing at LAX. Firefighters lined LAX's southernmost runway and waited for the plane to touch down. It was unclear how many passengers were on board.
Flight 1586 landed without problem on the damaged tire.
