S.Korea, Uruguay sign agreement on fisheries cooperation
SEOUL, Sept. 3 (Xinhua)– South Korea and Uruguay Wednesday signed an agreement on fisheries cooperation, which allows South Korean fishing vessels to further use Uruguay’s Monte Video Port, South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency reported.
The port of Monte Video, located on the Uruguay’s eastern coast, is used as a refueling center for about 50 South Korean fishing vessels operating near the Falkland Islands and the Antarctic Ocean.
Under the new agreement, South Korean vessels can get fresh supplies, unload catches, refuel and stay in the port when they are not fishing, Yonhap said.
According to the South Korean Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, the pact was reached on the sidelines of Uruguay President Tabare Vazquez’s visit to Seoul and calls for greater exchanges of information related to the development of undersea resources and scientific research.
The agreement was signed by Vice Minister of South Korean Agriculture and Fisheries Park Deok-bae and Uruguay’s Minister of Cattle, Agriculture and Fisheries Ernesto Agazzi.
The two sides plan to share know-how on the artificial cultivation of fish, distribution of seafood and advanced food processing, the ministry said.
