Oil and Gas Deposit Discovered in Kazakh West – TV

Excerpt from report by state-owned Kazakh TV on 4 September

[Presenter] A large oil and gas deposit has been found near the village of Petrov in Zelenov District of West Kazakhstan Region. A total of 245 cu.m. of oil a day is extracted via a 11-milimetre tube at the deposit - a very high rate of oil extraction. According to experts, this is one of the largest deposits discovered in Kazakhstan in the past 15 years.

[Correspondent] Oil prospecting near the deposit has been carried out over the past 50 years. Oil was discovered after drilling the 20th prospect well.

[Batyr Shalabayev, captioned as geologist] The quality of oil is very good - it is comparable to quality of the Brent oil.

[Marat Zholymbetov, captioned as head of a company] A total of 245 cu.m. of oil and 240,000 cu.m. of gas are extracted daily. There are, however, lots of things yet to be done.

[Correspondent] An experimental model of oil extraction at the deposit will be developed next year. The commercial oil extraction at the deposit is scheduled to start in 2010.
