PECO Partners With ENERGY STAR (R) To Provide Customers With More Energy Saving Tools

PECO has formed a partnership with ENERGY STAR to provide its customers with more money saving resources through the company's website at A new web-based, interactive home is now available to take visitors on a tour from attic to garage that is full of energy saving tips and green information.

PECO said it's working to help its customers become more energy efficient and better manage their energy costs. ENERGY STAR is a cooperative program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency to educate the public on consumer decisions that can save energy and help the environment. Consumers who use ENERGY STAR buying guidance for appliances, entertainment systems and office equipment can save up to 20 to 30 percent on their energy costs. In 2007 alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR , saved more than $16 billion on their utility bills while reducing the greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 27 million vehicles.

Examples of ENERGY STAR educational information include:

-- Air conditioner - an ENERGY STAR qualified model can save at least 10 percent more energy than standard models.

-- Office equipment - unplug any battery chargers or power adapters when not in use.

-- Lighting - replace your home's five most frequently used light fixtures or the bulbs in them with models that have earned the ENERGY STAR and save more than $65 each year in energy costs.

-- Air ducts - cover and seal all holes that lead from bathroom plumbing, ductwork, or electrical runs, especially on exterior walls such as around dryer vents and electrical outlets.

-- Kitchen faucets - a leaky faucet can waste gallons of water and energy for hot water.

-- Programmable thermostat - a programmable thermostat automatically adjusts your home's temperature settings for heating and air conditioners for times when no one is at home or during sleeping periods to save energy. Programmable thermostats are one of the actions with the quickest paybacks with an easy to install device that can save energy year-round every year.

The site also offers visitors information about how to make minor energy saving improvements, for example how to properly seal your home from drafts and what to consider when purchasing a new ENERGY STAR air conditioner or heating system.

This partnership is just one part of PECO's expanded programs aimed at making the company more environmentally friendly through energy efficiency and consumer education programs. The company's recently announced environmental initiatives amount to more than $15.3 million of work including the opening of PECO's first 'green building' in West Chester, Pa.; the installation of a green roof and a new Crown Lights messaging system at the company's Center City headquarters; upgrades to secure Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for many company buildings; and community and customer support for environmental and energy efficiency efforts.
