Five Unions Reject Alitalia Plan

Pilots and flight attendants in five unions unanimously rejected a plan to restructure Italy’s Alitalia Airlines Monday.

Massimo Notari of the pilot’s union Unione Piloti said the new plan would “massacre” the pilots, ANSA news reported.

”Breaking with the past can’t mean mortifying the workers,” National union federation UGL spokesman Roberto Pannella said.

The plan, which required legislative changes to Italy’s bankruptcy laws, is to divide the company into a “good company,” which would merge with Italy’s Air One airline and find a foreign partner. The remaining “bad company” would be liquidated.

Italy’s Welfare Minster Maurizio Sacconi urged the unions and the Compagnia Aerea Italiana to “show patience,” but time might be running short, the report said.

Antonio Divietri, president of flight attendant union Avia, said the plan lacked details and “any consideration for the quality needs” of the airline.
