Bushehr nuclear plant should be operational soon: Iranian official

TEHRAN, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Head of Iran's Majlis (Parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said on Tuesday that Iran's first nuclear power plant should become operational as soon as possible, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The Bushehr nuclear power plant suffers some technical problems, Boroujerdi said, adding that the political problems on the transfer of nuclear fuel had all been removed.

"We hope the current technical problems to be removed as soon as possible," he said, adding that the Russian contractor has promised to commission the Bushehr power plant by February 2009.

Russia is helping Iran to build the country's first nuclear power plant in the southern port of Bushehr. The plant was expected to launch early this year, but its operation was postponed for several months due to disputes on payment.

Russian ambassador to Tehran Alexander Sadovnikov said recently that Bushehr nuclear power plant will be completed by the end of 2008.

Iran is preparing to build more nuclear power plants, the official IRNA news agency reported in late August.
