GEORGE TOWN: The controversy surrounding Bukit Bendera Umno division chief Datuk Ahmad Ismail has reached a farcical extent, with petrol stations drawn into the fray.

Yesterday, text messages urging people not to buy petrol from a Shell station in Greenlane and another near Gembira Parade in Island Glades were widely circulated. They claimed the stations were owned by Ahmad.

However, both station operators yesterday denied that Ahmad was the owner.

Greenlane Shell petrol station operator Hassan Farouke said he had lodged a police report.

“The SMS is not true. I am the operator of this station.”

Another Shell petrol station operator, Seraz Ahmad, said he was the operator of the station near Gembira Parade in Island Glades. He, however, does not intend to lodge a report.

“I have been operating here for the past 15 years and the people from the community here know me.”

Both Hassan and Seraz said their businesses were not affected by the false text messages being circulated.
