The Alcatel-Lucent cable ship Ile de Sein landed in the Greenland's capital city Nuuk, the 2,100km section of Tele Greenland's submarine cable network.
After completing the cable loading in Calais, France, in July 2008, the Ile de Sein began laying segments one and two in early August 2008, from Landeyjasandur in Iceland to Qaqortoq in Greenland.
Following a route assessed with survey instruments mapping the seabed, these segments are three of the four sections composing the E90 million project 'Greenland Connect' awarded to Alcatel-Lucent in December 2007.
According to Alcatel-Lucent, the Greenland Connect submarine cable network will offer a capacity of up to 96x10Gbit/s. This deployment will enhance Tele Greenland's offering for voice and data network hubs, broadband internet, video conferencing, call centers and advanced multimedia applications.
Etienne Lafougere, president of submarine network activity at Alcatel-Lucent, said: "The severe weather conditions of Greenland and the North Atlantic Ocean were key challenges in defining the deployment plan for this project. This achievement is based on our ability to manage the simplest to the most complex turnkey project and to deliver on time."
