Travel Agencies Face Meltdown

TRAVEL agents could go under in an industry-wide meltdown, a trade expert warned last night

The collapse of XL and of a string of airlines in the face of high fuel prices and tough trading conditions would have knock-on effect, said Malcolm Preston of accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers.

He added: "I don't think XL will be the last victim. The trouble is now that travel agents may get into difficulties."

Passengers should book with reputable firms covered by industry bodies such as Abta to protect themselves against loss, he said.
