Gerber Expands Its Premium Baby Food Offerings With New Varieties

September 15, 2008

FLORHAM PARK, N.J., Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ — Gerber Products Company, now part of the Nestle Infant Nutrition portfolio, is expanding its line of premium baby foods by introducing three new dinner purees with DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and one new Organic dinner puree. Gerber is also relaunching its ORGANIC Cereal varieties, providing parents even more Organic options for their babies. The expansion of its fortified and organic product line is part of Gerber’s commitment to advancing the benefits infant food can offer. The items include:

— Dinner Purees with DHA: Garden Vegetables with Whole Wheat Pasta, Vegetable Risotto with Cheese, and Macaroni and Cheese with Vegetables all provide the following per serving: 18 milligrams of DHA, a full serving of vegetables, and 2-3 grams of protein.

— Organic Dinner Puree: Chicken with Country Vegetables and Rice is made with whole grain and provides the following per serving: 2 grams of protein and half a serving of vegetables.

— Organic Cereal: Whole Grain Oatmeal and Whole Grain Brown Rice are made from organic whole grain and contain Vitablocks(TM) Essential Nutrient Blend for cereals, providing an excellent source of iron and zinc for infants.

“It is important to introduce babies to the healthy tastes of fruits, vegetables and whole grains,” said Jillian Rado, R.D., Regulatory Specialist for Nestle Infant Nutrition. “Gerber’s new varieties, including purees with DHA and Organic foods for babies, provide healthy and flavorful options for parents who are concerned about providing their infants with the best nutrition.”

DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid that is found naturally in breast milk and many infant formulas, helps support brain and eye development in infants and some experts say that DHA consumption should increase as babies grow. Unfortunately, the amount of DHA that babies consume will likely level out or decline as solid foods begin to replace breast milk and formula in their diets.

These new purees with DHA complement the six existing varieties of GERBER(R) Purees with DHA, including recently added Vegetable with Whole Grain blends. These fruit or vegetable and grain blends are made with whole grains and 100 percent real GERBER vegetable or fruit puree. They do not contain artificial flavors and can be part of baby’s nutritious diet.

For parents who want more Organic choices for their children, the new Chicken with Country Vegetables and Rice ORGANIC Dinner provides a nutritious and flavorful option. Similar to other GERBER(R) ORGANIC Dinners, the new dinner has no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives.

Gerber is also offering parents the opportunity to have their babies eat organic foods from the very beginning with the relaunch of its ORGANIC Cereals made from whole grains. Not only will GERBER ORGANIC Cereals help moms introduce their infants to solid foods, but they will also continue to give babies essential nutrients well into toddlerhood. Both new and established GERBER ORGANIC varieties are certified Organic by Oregon Tilth and can help babies learn to enjoy the flavors of a healthy diet.

“These new DHA-fortified and Organic varieties are a great example of how Gerber uses nutrition, innovation and the latest scientific research to help give baby every advantage in life,” Rado said. “At Gerber, we are committed to providing the products, information and support parents need to help raise happy healthy babies and young children.”

Delivering the same quality as existing Gerber products, GERBER Purees with DHA, ORGANIC Dinners and ORGANIC Cereal varieties provide the nutrition that growing infants’ need, while introducing them to new tastes and textures as they transition to toddlerhood.
