Steelworkers From Kimberly, WI to Rally at NewPage Headquarters

September 15, 2008

MIAMISBURG, Ohio, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Union workers from United Steelworkers (USW) Local 2-9 will travel from Kimberly, Wisconsin to Miamisburg, Ohio on Sept. 16th to confront NewPage Corp. CEO Mark Suwyn about the company’s planned shutdown of their paper mill.

On July 30, 2008, NewPage announced the closure of the Kimberly, Wisconsin Paper mill, which would displace around 600 workers and devastate the small Wisconsin town. Workers and community residents are urging NewPage management to run the mill or sell it to another paper company.

Mill workers are quick to point out that the Kimberly mill is not being shut down because it is not profitable. “We have a world class mill and a world class workforce,” said USW Local 2-9 President Andy Nirschl. “There is no reason that this mill couldn’t be sold to another papermaker.”

To date, at least two potential buyers have expressed interest in purchasing the mill, but NewPage management has repeatedly rebuffed calls to sell the mill.

United Steelworkers officials are in talks with NewPage executives and political leaders to try and find a productive future for the mill, but to date, no solution has been agreed upon. Members of USW Local 2-9 are committed to keeping the Kimberly mill open in one form or another.

About the Rally

The rally will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 16 at NewPage Corporation’s Headquarters at 8540 Gander Creek Dr. in Miamisburg, OH. Two busloads of members from Local 2-9 will be riding down for this action. Dayton area Steelworkers and other supporters will join the contingent from Wisconsin.
